Prepare an interview answer using STAR-L

Use the STAR-L structure to explain a real experience and connect it to the job you are applying for.

No account. Your notes stay in this browser page. Save a file to keep them. Nothing is sent to an AI service here.

Opening a file replaces the notes on this page.

01

Pick the question.

Practice a past-experience question. Your interview may use different wording.

Explain how you investigated it, chose an approach, and checked what happened.

02

Find the facts.

Start with a rough memory. Coursework, volunteering, and experience abroad count as places to look.

See a fictional example

A course team had duplicate survey entries. I asked our supervisor to confirm the rule, cleaned the file using that rule, and documented the changes. The team used the file in its final report. I did not measure a percentage improvement.

Possible Link for a data-validation role: “I would bring the same habit of checking the rule and keeping a record others can review.”

This example has no documented disagreement. It would need different evidence to answer a conflict question.

03

Build your STAR-L.

Fill what you know. Missing details become questions to investigate. Here, L means Link to the role.

What was happening? Keep the context short.

What were you responsible for?

What did you personally do, and why?

What happened? A qualitative or unsuccessful outcome is still an outcome.
